Cauliflower - Onion Karamedu/Curry

Today for the fourth day of BM, i choose Cauliflower-Onion Curry... I know this is quite common as curry but one of the house favorites ! Amma never made Gobi at home..maybe due to the worms i guess.. So i never developed a taste for it! I started having it only, when Manchurians become popular in Blore.. So for years together this was the only form in which i consumed Gobi...

A complete opposite of me is S.. he loves gobi/cauliflower! My MIL does this very often and he even has it raw...! Post marriage, i would just make some for him & would not eat them myself... and he would coax me to try, telling me how tasty they were..would rationalize with me...say its all a mental block ( remember i told you i have stuck notions in my mind, regarding veggies :)).. .Then, slowly i started liking it in Kurma.. included them is subzis and now love this Curry/Poriyal.. I still claim its the onion which makes it edible :).. Here to a very simple & easy but very tasty curry!

Ingredients
1.Oil - 2 tsp
2. Mustard seeds - 1.5 tsp
3. Channa dal - 2 tap
4. Urad dal - 2tsp
5. Cauliflower - 1 medium size
6. Onion - 1/2 cup
7. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
8. Red Chilli powder - 2 tsp
9. Salt - to taste

Preparation Time!!
1. Soak cauliflower florets in a bowl of salt water for 10 minutes
1a. In a pan, add oil and once warm add mustard seeds. When it splutters, add channa & urad dal and sauté till they light brown. Then add onion and sauté

2. Once the onions turn light brown, drain the water of the florets and add the florets to the pan. Mix well, add the red chilli, turmeric powder & salt. Mix well and saute till the florets are cooked

Serve with rice & sambhar or you could eat it with Roti's too!

Pointers
* Many don't soak in water & directly add the florets..but soaking them in salt water, ensures worms come out, if any! & you do get the hope that maybe you are having worm free cauli's ;)
** It shrinks in size as you cook, so don't think a medium size cauli is too large for say 2 people
*** Keep flame on medium-low mode, as this prevents darkening of onions and florets too.. Might seem like a trivial tip, but in my urgency to cook fast in mornings, i end up burning it, almost all the time :D

Serving : 2 people
Duration : 20-25 minutes

  4. I didn't know cauliflower could look this good. I too need a lot of coaxing to make just cauliflower curry, I can have it as a combo with other veggies. Should probably try this recipe once.

  5. actually the only way I eat cauliflower is Indian way..I think with all the spices it masks the tastelessness of the cauliflower by itself. I never used to like it and then once I made aloo gobi and then I became hooked on it!!!

  15. Love the color of your curry, to end the curry I add the Curry powder also. Try it next time and I am sure curry powder will join the list of onion that gives taste to this curry.
