Thakkali Kai Masiyal / Raw (green) Tomato Sambhar

Necessity is the Mother of Invention they say..does that apply to our kitchens?? Have there been times, when you decide to cook something, only to realize that you dont have the ingredients to make the dish :).. What do you do?? Do you make an alternative dish or land up substituting  a new ingredient, which becomes your signature dish, that everyone can stop raving about :D

Kothavarangai Paruppu Usili/ Cluster Beans Lentil Curry

Paruppu (Lentil) Usili is a very popular dish and is done on all auspicious occasions be it weddings or festivals! Its called Usili, when we powder the the lentil and mix it with veggies...The best part of this dish is, we can alternate the taste by using different veggies like beans, cluster beans, capsicum, banana flower or even broccoli :)..

Kothamalli Thogayal/Raw Cilantro Chutney

One of the other staple items in South Indian households in Thogayal..The best way i can possibly explain this is..its a thicker version of a chutney. But we have this by mixing it with rice and ghee/oil!

Parangikai Vathakozhambu / Pumpkin Tamarind Sambhar

Assuming, this would be my last day on Earth and i am given a choice of one dish that i can have..then it has to be Vatha Kozhambu and Potato Fry! I am sure, anybody who has ever tasted this will agree with me :)).. Unlike other sambhar / kozhambu the tamarind water is boiled for a very long time, till it shrinks and thickens ( vathardhu meaning to drain/ shrink), hence the name!

Vazakkai Karamedu/ Raw Banana Curry

Raw Banana(Vazha is banana & kai means raw) Karamedu or Poriyal is one of the easiest things to make. You could prepare so many dishes of them..be it chips, bajji's, different types of karamedu..gosh!.
I noticed that i have been constantly rambling about how i will soon get back to blogging..but have never been able to implement it :(.. A lot of things has kept me occupied.. travel, shifting to a new place and blogging unfortunately took a back seat..I am sure i am the ' Forgotten Fossil' of the Blog world :D, but its never too late to get back right.. atleast thats what my mom s been telling me :) n here i am, with a revamp of an old posted recipe..

Ven Aval Pongal/ Flattened Rice Pongal

Pongal is a very famous South Indian delicacy, made with rice, moong dal & tempered with spices like pepper, cumin ! S is crazy about this & when i was i Chennai, i have seen my friends dig this too.. They love Pongal, chutney for breakfast.. Its quite a heavy dish, leaves you fuller & is nutritious too.. but i could never really understand their fascination for this dish...

Kancheepuram Idli

I have never been a great fan of Idli's.. But Darshini( Small eat outs in Blore) were always welcome..I dono whether it was the chutney which did the trick, but i can never say No to them..Not that i wouldn't eat them at home, but not one of my favorites :)..Coming to this idli, as the name suggests, it got famous from its place of origin 'Kancheepuram' - the famous place, known for its silk saris in TN, India.. This idli is mildly flavored with spices like pepper, cumin/jeera & ginger powder(Sukhu podi).

Paruppu Sevai/Lentil based Rice Noodles

Today, for the BM i have chosen Paruppu Sevai.. Sevai/Thin vermicelli is a house favorite! My patti would make it often and she would make different varieties like lemon, tamarind, coconut, jaggery, til etc..Imagine one base & so many varieties!

Cauliflower - Onion Karamedu/Curry

Today for the fourth day of BM, i choose Cauliflower-Onion Curry... I know this is quite common as curry but one of the house favorites ! Amma never made Gobi at home..maybe due to the worms i guess.. So i never developed a taste for it! I started having it only, when Manchurians become popular in Blore.. So for years together this was the only form in which i consumed Gobi...

Kovakkai Podi Karamedu/ Gherkins Spiced Fry

Kovakkai Or Gherkins is one veggie we both like :)..Yesterday i had posted the Curry powder & today i thought i would extend its use to a veggie and choose this as a part of BM 15. Its not necessary to add this powder to the veggie, but its different & a variation is always good right :)

Pudina Thogayal/Mint Paste

Today i start Valli's BM #15 & this time its going to be 7 days of Accompaniments! For the very first day i choose Pudina or Mint Thogayal...I am just thinking how can i best describe a Thogayal :).. A thicker version of chutney maybe???..Hmmm..not exactly doesn't taste like chutney really! Thick as a dip..true! The base of a thogayal (pronounced as Tho-ga-yal) is mainly lentils & chillies..

I have been planning to update the post with pics but strangely its been a long time since i made this at home! So when we picked up a packet of frozen drumsticks, i thought i shouldn't postpone writing this..

Karadayan Nombu

Yesterday was Karadayan Nombu, a simple & small festival celebrated by the south indian brahmin community, where the ladies pray for the longevity of their husbands...No, this not restricted only to married people, even unmarried women & girls pray to find a good husband..something in the lines of Karvachauth :)..(I am sure that rings a bell, how many movies & serials we have seen, where the preparation of that starts months..oops! episodes before :D )

Instant Rasam/ Kili Molaga Rasam

For the sixth day of the Marathon, i choose Instant Rasam, also called as Kili Molaga Rasam.. Kili means pinch; Molaga mean Chilli, so it means making a rasam, by using less ingredients quickly :)..There are days am sure, when you don't want to cook!! You don't want to prepare something elaborate, just fix something coz you are hungry or when you are tired and need an instant fix ( of course, there is maggi :)), but if you have a family like mine..which believes rice is the quick and best fix, then this rasam comes in handy..
When my periamma told me about, i was quite speculative about it...i was like what?? its just going to taste like puli thani! (tamarind water)..but was pleasantly surprised..it is definitely a little different from other rasam's but good.. i just don't know how to best describe the taste.. guess you need to try it out :)

Mysore Rasam

Today, for the fourth day of the Marathon, i choose Mysore Rasam. I have no idea, why it is called so..and i have also noticed that this recipe varies across all households :).. It amazes me sometimes, that a simple dish can be done in so many different ways..I guess, it has been been modified as per each household's taste.. as long as it tastes yum, i am not complaining!
This is the recipe done in our house. My MIL does this and i have learnt the same from her. Its simple, light and very tasty!

Lemon Rasam

Today, for the second day of Marathon, i choose Lemon Rasam. As a kid, i wasn't fond of Rasam.. strange right! I was okie with Paruppu Rasam but i would run if i saw rasam rice, in fact rice for that matter.. i preferred tiffins :).. Over a period of time, i have developed a taste..rather a strong taste for rice based items and i am in love with sathamudhu saadham :)..Learnt this mild tasting rasam from my periamma.. What i love about this rasam is, its tangy twist..yup! the lemon adds the zings & gives a very different distinct flavor!

Seeraa Rasam

Today is my first day of Valli's Blogging Marathon and i choose 7 days of Rasam or Saathamudhu! Its one of the most comforting dish and is pretty simple to make :)..Konjum saadham (rice), saathamudu & karamedu and you can see me happy for the rest of the day.. i guess food does that to me!!
This week has been lousy with respect to food!! We went to a Thai restaurant and Pad Thai was soggy & sad..the next day we tried a new indian restaurant..food was not great either..i hate it when dine-outs are a disaster and when we got back, i was more than happy to fix us with this simple rasam!
Rajiamma, my granny did the best version of this.. i guess some people have the kai man am (the skill of making the dish perfectly)! Something light, filling and perfect when you are sick too.. the light flavors just soothe you..so off to Seera ( nothing but Jeera) Saathamudu..
